Support for Creating a Better Work/Life Balance

For many LGBTQ+ people, difficulties with work life balance aren’t simply about being “too busy,” they can also be shaped by burnout, people pleasing, perfectionism, minority stress, and the pressure to constantly prove your worth.

UNDERSTANDING WORK LIFE BALANCE

Many people struggle to find a balance between work, relationships, responsibilities, rest, and personal wellbeing. Over time, constantly feeling under pressure, emotionally drained, or unable to switch off can begin affecting mental health, relationships, sleep, self worth, and overall quality of life.

For many LGBTQ+ people, work related stress can also be shaped by additional pressures such as minority stress, workplace discrimination, masking parts of identity, people pleasing, perfectionism, or feeling the need to constantly prove yourself in order to feel accepted or valued.

In a culture that often rewards overworking and productivity at all costs, it can become easy to lose connection with your own emotional needs, boundaries, identity, and sense of balance.

HOW POOR WORK LIFE BALANCE CAN AFFECT MENTAL HEALTH

Poor work life balance can show up in many different ways. Some people experience anxiety, burnout, irritability, emotional numbness, low mood, exhaustion, or difficulty relaxing. Others may feel trapped in cycles of guilt whenever they slow down, rest, or prioritise themselves.

Over time, chronic stress can place the nervous system under significant strain, leaving people feeling constantly “switched on,” emotionally overwhelmed, disconnected, or unable to fully recharge. Work stress can also affect relationships, boundaries, self esteem, confidence, emotional regulation, and physical health.

Sometimes people become so used to functioning in survival mode that exhaustion starts to feel normal.

LGBTQ+ THERAPY AND WORK LIFE BALANCE

In therapy, I offer a warm, LGBTQ+ affirming, and non judgemental space where we can explore the emotional impact work, stress, burnout, pressure, and responsibility may be having on your life and wellbeing.

Together, we can begin understanding patterns linked to perfectionism, people pleasing, anxiety, shame, emotional exhaustion, boundaries, self worth, or the pressure to constantly achieve or perform. Therapy can also help develop healthier coping strategies, emotional regulation, self compassion, and a stronger connection to your own needs and limits.

Creating a healthier work life balance is not about becoming less ambitious or productive. It is about building a life that feels more emotionally sustainable, balanced, and connected to who you are outside of work.

I work with LGBTQ+ clients both online and in person from my practice in Manchester city centre.
