LGBTQ+ Anxiety And The Threat System

Anxiety can feel exhausting and overwhelming, especially when it starts affecting everyday things like relationships, work, confidence, sleep, or even leaving the house. Over time, many people begin feeling stuck in survival mode, constantly overthinking, scanning for danger, or waiting for something to go wrong.

For LGBTQ+ people, anxiety can sometimes be shaped by experiences of rejection, bullying, shame, masking, or feeling unsafe being fully yourself around other people. The nervous system can slowly become used to operating on high alert, even when there’s no immediate danger present.

In this video, I talk about anxiety, the threat system, and why anxiety isn’t a sign that something is “wrong” with you. I also explore how therapy can help you better understand your triggers, regulate emotional overwhelm, and begin building a different relationship with anxiety. If anxiety has been taking over your life or leaving you feeling emotionally drained, I’d really encourage you to watch the video.

If any of this resonates with you and you’d like support exploring it further, I offer LGBTQ+ affirming therapy both online and in person from my practice in Manchester city centre. You’re welcome to get in touch to arrange a free 15 minute introductory call
