The Mental Health Impact of Online Homophobia & Transphobia

Click on thOnline homophobia and transphobia can have a significant impact on LGBTQ+ mental health and wellbeing. From hateful comments and slurs to targeted harassment and abuse, many queer people regularly face hostility online simply for existing visibly and authentically. While people are often told to “ignore the trolls,” repeated exposure to discrimination and hate can still leave emotional scars.

For many LGBTQ+ people, online abuse doesn’t happen in isolation. It can echo earlier experiences of bullying, rejection, shame, or marginalisation, reinforcing feelings of fear, hypervigilance, anger, or self doubt. In this video, I reflect on the mental health impact of online homophobia and transphobia, the importance of LGBTQ+ resilience and connection, and why protecting your mental health online matters.
