Why We Need To Stop Calling It Conversion Therapy

Many LGBTQ+ people have spent years hearing promises that conversion practices would finally be banned, only for governments to delay, consult, and ultimately fail to act. Following the recent announcement in The King’s Speech of plans for a trans inclusive ban on conversion practices, there is understandable hope — but also scepticism within LGBTQ+ communities.

As an LGBTQ+ affirming therapist, I also believe it’s important we challenge the language often used around these harmful practices. The phrase “conversion therapy” can unintentionally soften the reality of what is taking place. There is nothing therapeutic about attempts to shame, suppress, or erase somebody’s sexual orientation or gender identity.

In this video, I explore why language matters, the psychological harm these practices can cause, and why many LGBTQ+ people remain cautious after years of political delay.

If any of this resonates with you and you’d like support exploring it further, I offer LGBTQ+ affirming therapy both online and in person from my practice in Manchester city centre. You’re welcome to get in touch to arrange a free 15 minute introductory call.
