Why Unsolicited Advice Can Feel So Frustrating

Many LGBTQ+ people have experienced relationships where someone constantly offers unsolicited advice, tells them what they “should” do, or acts as though they know what’s best for everyone else. While this can sometimes come from a good place, it can also feel intrusive, controlling, emotionally draining, or dismissive of our own autonomy and judgement.

Learning to “stay in your lane” isn’t about becoming selfish or uncaring. It’s about recognising healthy emotional boundaries, understanding what belongs to us and what doesn’t, and resisting the urge to control, rescue, or manage other people’s lives. When boundaries become blurred, people can end up exhausted, resentful, overly responsible for others, or disconnected from their own needs and direction.

In therapy, developing self awareness and stronger boundaries can help people focus less on fixing or comparing themselves to others and more on their own healing, values, growth, and emotional wellbeing. In this video, I explore the psychology behind unsolicited advice, emotional boundaries, and why staying in your own lane can create healthier and more authentic relationships.

If any of this resonates with you and you’d like support exploring it further, I offer LGBTQ+ affirming therapy both online and in person from my practice in Manchester city centre. You’re welcome to get in touch to arrange a free 15 minute introductory call.
