Coming out later in life can bring a huge mix of emotions. For many LGBTQ+ people, it is not simply a moment of freedom or relief. It can also bring fear, uncertainty, grief, guilt, and difficult questions about relationships, identity, family, friendships, and the life we once imagined for ourselves.
Many people who come out later in life have spent years hiding parts of themselves in order to feel safe, accepted, or to fit into societal expectations. Over time, this can create emotional exhaustion, shame, disconnection, and the feeling of not fully living as your authentic self.
At the same time, coming out later in life can also be deeply liberating. It can create opportunities for honesty, self acceptance, deeper connection, and finally allowing yourself to live more openly and authentically on your own terms.
In this video, I explore the emotional realities of coming out later in life, including both the challenges and the joys that can come with it. If you are questioning your identity, navigating a later life coming out journey, or struggling with the emotional impact of hiding parts of yourself for many years, I’d really encourage you to watch the video.
If any of this resonates with you and you’d like support exploring it further, I offer LGBTQ+ affirming therapy both online and in person from my practice in Manchester city centre. You’re welcome to get in touch to arrange a free 15 minute introductory call.
