For many LGBTQ+ people, getting older can bring up complicated feelings around visibility, identity, self worth, and belonging. Much of LGBTQ+ culture can feel heavily focused on youth, appearance, and desirability, particularly within apps, nightlife, and online spaces. Over time, this can leave some people questioning whether they still matter or where they fit within the community.
Feelings of invisibility, loneliness, or comparison can quietly affect mental health and self esteem as people age. But growing older also brings something powerful: resilience, depth, authenticity, and the opportunity to build connections in spaces where we are valued for far more than appearance alone.
In this video, I reflect on growing older in the LGBTQ+ community, the emotional impact of feeling unseen, and why finding affirming spaces and genuine connection can make such a difference to our sense of belonging and wellbeing.
If any of this resonates with you and you’d like support exploring it further, I offer LGBTQ+ affirming therapy both online and in person from my practice in Manchester city centre. You’re welcome to get in touch to arrange a free 15 minute introductory call.
