What is GSRD Therapy?

LGBTQ+ THERAPY & MENTAL HEALTH

Finding the right therapist can feel daunting, particularly if you’ve previously felt misunderstood, judged, or had to explain basic aspects of your identity. Many LGBTQ+ people arrive in therapy carrying experiences shaped not only by personal challenges, but also by living in a society that can still be influenced by prejudice, discrimination, and heteronormative assumptions.

As an Advanced Accredited Gender, Sexuality and Relationship Diversity (GSRD) Therapist, I provide a warm, affirming, and non judgemental space where your identity is understood as part of your experience rather than treated as a problem to be solved. You don’t need to educate me about LGBTQ+ identities, relationships, communities, or lifestyles. Instead, we can focus on the challenges that have brought you to therapy.

WHAT IS GSRD THERAPY?

Gender, Sexuality and Relationship Diversity (GSRD) Therapy is a specialist therapeutic approach that recognises the diversity of human identities, sexualities, relationships, and ways of living. Drawing on affirmative, relational, and humanistic traditions, it aims to create a therapeutic space where people can explore their experiences without fear of judgement, pathologisation, or having to explain who they are.

GSRD therapy is underpinned by several core principles, including a commitment to social justice, cultural humility, awareness of oppression and minority stress, trauma informed practice, contemporary understandings of sexuality and gender, and an appreciation of the wider social and cultural contexts that shape people’s lives. Rather than viewing distress solely as an individual problem, GSRD therapy recognises how experiences such as discrimination, exclusion, shame, invisibility, and prejudice can affect mental health and wellbeing.

As an Advanced Accredited GSRD Therapist, these principles inform the way I work with clients. My aim is to provide a safe, affirming, and non judgemental space where you can explore whatever has brought you to therapy, whether that relates directly to your identity or not.

WHY WORK WITH AN LGBTQ+ AFFIRMING THERAPIST?

Many LGBTQ+ people have experienced situations where they felt misunderstood, judged, stereotyped, or forced to explain aspects of themselves that should never need justification. Even within healthcare and mental health services, people can encounter assumptions about sexuality, gender, relationships, family structures, or what constitutes a “normal” life.

Working with an LGBTQ+ affirming therapist can reduce some of that burden. Rather than starting from assumptions, affirming therapy recognises the diversity of LGBTQ+ experiences and understands the impact that minority stress, stigma, discrimination, and social exclusion can have on mental health. This creates space to focus on your experiences, relationships, emotions, and goals without needing to defend your identity.

MY APPROACH TO THERAPY

My work is grounded in a person centred approach, meaning the therapeutic relationship sits at the heart of the work we do together. I believe meaningful change happens when people feel genuinely heard, understood, accepted, and supported.

Alongside this foundation, I draw from a range of approaches including Transactional Analysis, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), mindfulness, trauma informed practice, and Internal Family Systems informed ideas where appropriate. This allows me to adapt therapy to your individual needs rather than expecting you to fit a particular model.

I have a particular interest in minority stress, shame, self worth, trauma, identity development, relationships, addiction and recovery, emotional regulation, and the long term impact of growing up in non affirming environments. Whether you are seeking support for a specific difficulty or simply want a therapist who understands LGBTQ+ experiences, therapy can provide a space for reflection, healing, growth, and self understanding.
